Prep
Your Quilt
|
Quilt Preparation:
~ Important note: Your quilt top should have
square and straight borders.
~
Iron both sides of your top. Press the seams to one side for the top.
While ironing, check top for holes, cuts, loose threads in seams etc.and correct as
necessary. If you want me to iron the top, there will be a $10.00 charge.
~ If
quilt top has a specific top and bottom, please designate the top of the quilt with a
safety pin.
~ All
layers of your quilt (backing, batting and quilt top) must be separate when I receive
them. So please do not baste the quilt in any way.
~ Make
sure both backing and batting are at least 6 inches longer and 6 inches wider than the
quilt top.
(This allows for a 3 inch margin all around.)
- ~ Use 1/2" seams for
your backing, press the seam open instead of to one side as you would when ironing pieced tops. Remove the selvage edge when
piecing the back, this helps prevent puckering of the back when quilted.
-
- ~ Your quilt will be quilted in the order in
which it is received. If I see there is a problem I will contact you and discuss
options. At that time I can give you an approximate completion date. Turn
around time depends largely on the season of the year. Reminder!
July, August, & September are harvest months, and no quilting is done then.
Please
e-mail or call ahead before shipping.
Package your materials carefully for shipment. It is your decision if
you want to insure your package. Also, "delivery confirmation" is
inexpensive and provides a toll free number to call, enabling you to
check on the date and time your quilt arrives at Quilted Treasures. We suggest Priority Mail with "Delivery
confirmation" for peace of mind. Insurance may also be added.
- Complete the Quilting Order Form and enclose it with your
shipment.
Should
I Wash the quilt top first?
Each quilter
has their own way of dealing with fabric they choose in their quilt.
I will give
you some information that might help you with this choice.
| Wash: |
Don't Wash |
| do not like
sizing fabrics have in them |
likes the
sizing in fabric, feels it gives fabric a sturdy feel |
| chemical
sensitivity |
is a bit
easier to work with |
| preshrinks
the fabrics |
|
| tests for
color fastness, you don't want to uses a bleeding fabric |
|
| allows for
blending with vintage fabrics |
|
This
question is really "should I wash my fabric choices before cutting and piecing
my top?"
My
personal choice is:
pre-wash
all fabrics.
press
the fabric.
If
fabric is too soft after pre-washing then spray sizing or starch as you pressing the
fabric. This will crisp it up.
important
!
if
you pre-wash some of your fabric and not the rest then you quilt could very well come out
'uneven'. remember, "If you wash one piece of fabric you need to wash it
all." I store my fabric in plastic containers with
lids so dust and light don't affect them.
So
decide... and start collecting that fabric to make your next Quilted Treasure.
