"Spring Poppies" was the first is a series of seasons  wall hangings.  The design incorporates applique, embroidery, and layered free hand quilting.  a four seasons commission for the Wheatfield Public Library, Wheatfield, IN. , the concept, design, execution and quilting  are by Darlene DeVries.

This was my first ever landscape wall hanging and although is was a huge challenge for me I totally enjoyed every step of the project.  I learned about perspective and how to cut out hundreds of flowers and leaves.  I am still finding leaves in the couch cushions...

Summer Dreams

For this quilt I wanted a picket fence filled with flowers and in the background viewing wild flowers on a slope.  The biggest challenge was cutting out all the many many flowers that would be used in the scene and learning about the depth of field concept.  I have learned so very much doing all of these landscape wallhangings...and I learn more each time I do another one.

Autumn Leaves

This lovely autumn scene was a true pleasure to make especially since that is my favorite time of year.  I love the colors and smells.  I cut out hundreds of leaves to attach to the tree and to have falling softly on the ground.  I had a difficult time at first on how to 'make a tree'.  But I looked up and out my window and the model was right in front of me.  Then is was smooth sailing the rest of the way.  Each leaf and the trees are individually cut out and raw edged appliqued' on the wallhanging.  I quilted all the elements down in this quilt with a free motion/wind blown style quilting.

The Waiting Bench

As in the Autum leaves wall hanging I did another tree that I pictured in a nice town park.  The limbs laiden with snow nestled in and around the branches was a must.  With maybe a leaf still hanging on the branch out of stubborness.  Then the lamp post giving the scene a bit more interest.  Standing back to take a look, it still needed something.  It took me several days looking at the wall hanging to realize...it needed a bench!  So there goes the name of the wall hanging...The Waiting Bench.
